| SIDEWINDER KEYS
BMW and Mercedes started using laser cut, or sidewinder keys many years ago.Now Honda, Acura, Toyota, Lexus, Infinity, and many more, including Pontiac, are using this style of key. A sidewinder key will not have the jagged edge of the standard key, instead the cuts are found on the 2 flat sides of the key. | TRANSPONDER KEYS
In the mid-90's car manufacturers started equipping vehicles with TRANSPONDERS. A transponder is a radio chip that comunicates with the onboard computer in the car. If the computer does not receive the correct signal from the transponder key, it will not start. As you can expect these keys are more costly than older designs. While it may seem expensive to have a duplicate made, it is very expensive to originate a key when all are lost. |

| VATS KEYS
Starting in the early 80's and running through the late 90's, GM used a VATS system in their high end cars. This consisted of a key equiped with a resistor. If the onboard computer in the car does not read the correct resistance the car will not start. |
